Coffee berry borer

Systematic position. Hypothenemus pubescens is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a highly specialized beetle known for its destructive impact on the reproductive structures of host plants, particularly within tropical and subtropical regions.

Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the coffee plant. However, due to its polyphagous nature, it can also infest various other tropical species. The beetle is attracted to fruits and seeds that provide a suitable environment for the boring and nutritional requirements of its larvae.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle is characterized by its internal nature, as the beetle spends almost its entire existence within the fruit. A female bores into the berry, creating galleries where she deposits eggs. The larvae develop inside the seed, feeding on the endosperm. This cryptic behavior provides significant protection against environmental fluctuations and many contact-based pesticide applications.

Damage and economic importance. The economic damage caused by Hypothenemus pubescens is substantial, as it directly attacks the marketable part of the crop. Infestation leads to bean destruction, reduction in yield weight, and a significant decline in beverage quality. Furthermore, the boreholes created by the insect serve as entry points for secondary fungal infections, which further degrade the quality of the harvested product.

Control measures. Controlling this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Cultural practices including the rigorous collection of infested berries to reduce the pest population density.
• Monitoring using attractant-baited traps to track population spikes.
• Application of biological control agents, specifically entomopathogenic fungi, which are effective in controlling populations while minimizing chemical exposure.
