Description

Systematic position: The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus seriatus), often referred to by the synonym Hypothenemus hampei, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is considered the most devastating pest of coffee worldwide, causing massive agricultural economic losses.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the coffee plant (Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora). While its host range is limited, the borer thrives in any region where coffee is grown, as it relies on the seeds of the coffee berry to complete its complex reproductive cycle.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect's life cycle occurs entirely within the coffee berry. Mated females bore into the berry and lay eggs inside the seeds. The larvae feed on the seed tissue, creating galleries that destroy the endosperm. The duration of the cycle is temperature-dependent and typically lasts about four weeks under tropical conditions.

Nature of damage: Damage is caused by both adults and larvae boring into the berries. This results in direct loss of marketable yield, as damaged beans have lower weight and poor quality, making them unsuitable for export or processing. Additionally, the feeding galleries facilitate secondary infections by fungi, which further degrade the beans.

Protection measures: Management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy:

  • Sanitation: Removing all residual berries from the trees and the ground after harvest.
  • Trapping: Using attractant traps containing methanol and ethanol mixtures.
  • Biological control: Applying entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana to suppress borer populations.
  • Chemical control: Utilizing selective insecticides where economically feasible and permitted.
