Coffee berry borer

Hypothenemus setosus is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets coffee berries, posing a constant threat to the coffee industry worldwide by compromising yield quality.

The host range is centered on coffee plants, though the species can inhabit various other tropical crops. Due to its cryptic nature, the beetle often establishes deep within the plant tissues, making its detection difficult during the early stages of infestation, which is a major challenge for plantation managers and agronomic specialists.

The biology of the pest is defined by its ability to bore into the berry, where the female lays eggs. The larvae develop entirely inside the seed, consuming the endosperm and completing their life cycle within the protected environment of the coffee cherry. This internal development is the primary reason why standard external chemical treatments are often ineffective.

Damage is characterized by the presence of small entry holes in the berries, followed by internal boring that renders the beans hollow and structurally compromised. The economic impact is severe, as the infested beans lose their market value, taste quality, and viability for processing, leading to substantial financial losses for growers.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are crucial:
