Coffee berry borer beetle
Hypothenemus tantillus
Description
Hypothenemus tantillus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. As a specialized agricultural pest, it primarily targets coffee crops, representing a significant challenge for farmers in tropical coffee-growing regions worldwide who strive to maintain harvest quality.
The host range is primarily focused on coffee plants (Coffea spp.). The adult beetles bore into the fruit to establish galleries for egg-laying. While coffee is its primary target, the insect is capable of infesting various other seeds and fruits, which allows it to persist in the environment even when primary crops are not at the peak fruiting stage.
The biology of this pest is characterized by an internal life cycle. After entering the berry, the female lays eggs within the seed. The developing larvae feed exclusively inside the berry, which provides both food and protection from the elements and many natural predators. This cryptic behavior is the main reason why the pest is so difficult to eradicate.
The damage caused by Hypothenemus tantillus is catastrophic to the value of coffee beans. By tunneling through the endosperm, larvae destroy the integrity of the bean. This damage leads to berry drop, reduced yield, and secondary infections by fungi, making the beans unacceptable for high-quality specialty coffee markets.
Effective management strategies typically involve an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Stringent sanitation practices, such as stripping all berries from trees after harvest.
- Deployment of specialized pheromone-based traps to monitor and suppress adult populations.
- Application of biological control agents, including entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana.
- Strategic chemical control measures, applied only when population thresholds indicate necessity.
