Description

The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus tuberculosus) is a small but highly destructive beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. It is a major pest for coffee growers worldwide, causing severe damage to developing coffee berries and their seeds.

This pest exclusively targets coffee plants of the Coffea genus. Its ability to infest fruits at various stages of maturity makes it a difficult challenge for farmers. Even a small population can expand rapidly under favorable weather conditions, leading to significant economic losses for commercial coffee producers.

The life cycle of this beetle is completed almost entirely within the coffee berry. The female bores into the fruit to lay her eggs, and the larvae subsequently feed on the internal endosperm. Because the beetle lives inside the fruit, it is protected from most environmental threats and many traditional contact-based chemical treatments.

Damage caused by Hypothenemus tuberculosus includes the formation of boreholes on the surface of berries, which facilitates the growth of secondary pathogens. These infections lead to rot and premature drop of the fruit. Consequently, the affected coffee beans lose their value due to physical destruction and quality degradation of the final product.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include meticulous farm sanitation, which involves removing all remaining fruits from the trees and ground after harvest. Monitoring with pheromone traps is also crucial to time the interventions accurately and reduce the reliance on chemical pesticides, ensuring a more sustainable approach.

Biological control remains a promising field of research, particularly the use of entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana. These natural enemies have shown effectiveness in suppressing borer populations in humid environments, providing an alternative to synthetic chemicals that may disrupt local ecosystems.
