Description

Systematic position: Hypurus bertrandi belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest known to interact exclusively with host plants within the Portulacaceae family, having evolved specific biological adaptations to survive on these plants.

Host plants: The primary host is the common purslane (Portulaca oleracea). While often considered a weed, where purslane is cultivated for culinary purposes or as an ornamental plant, Hypurus can become a significant nuisance, causing aesthetic and physical damage to the crops.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is closely tied to the host plant's growth season. The adults overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. Once the weather warms, they emerge to feed on leaves and lay eggs inside the stems or leaf stalks. The larvae remain hidden within the plant tissue throughout their development, transitioning into pupae inside the stems before emerging as adults.

Nature of damage: Damage is categorized into two types: adult feeding and larval infestation. Adults create small, distinct holes in the leaves (shotholing). Larval feeding inside the stems disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to stunted growth, wilting of the affected branches, and potentially the death of the entire plant if infestation levels are high.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is recommended for dealing with this weevil:

  • Sanitation: Remove and destroy infested plant material to prevent the next generation.
  • Cultural practices: Regular weeding of nearby areas to eliminate alternate host reservoirs.
  • Soil management: Cultivating the soil in late autumn to disrupt overwintering sites.
  • Chemical control: Use of approved systemic insecticides if damage thresholds are exceeded in cultivated garden areas.
