Portulaca weevil

The Portulaca weevil (Hypurus bertrandi) is a highly specialized beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). This insect is known primarily as a significant pest of common purslane (Portulaca oleracea), which can be cultivated as both an edible green and a medicinal herb.

The host range of Hypurus bertrandi is restricted almost exclusively to members of the Portulaca genus. The beetles are perfectly adapted to the biological characteristics of these plants, which serve as the essential nutritional source for both the adult stage and the developing larvae. Their presence is particularly noted in regions with intensive cultivation or abundant wild growth of purslane.

The life cycle involves several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult weevils feed on the foliage, creating small feeding punctures. However, the most severe damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems and petioles. By feeding internally on the plant tissues, they disrupt the transport of nutrients and water, severely compromising the health of the host plant throughout the growing season.

The economic impact of this pest is primarily associated with the degradation of the crop's quality. Typical damage patterns include:

• Characteristic leaf pitting and perforation.
• Wilting, stunted growth, and stem distortion due to larval feeding.
• Loss of commercial value for vegetable purslane.
• Premature death of heavily infested seedlings or plants.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control Hypurus bertrandi. This includes cultural practices such as removing infested plant debris at the end of the season to interrupt the wintering cycle. In case of significant infestations, selective application of insecticides may be necessary, but only with products certified for vegetable crops, ensuring that pre-harvest intervals are strictly observed to guarantee food safety.
