Grape clearwing moth

The Grape clearwing moth (Ichneumenoptera chrysophanes) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are well-known for their resemblance to wasps and bees, a mimicry strategy that serves as a protective mechanism, while their larvae pose a severe threat to the structural integrity of grapevines.

The primary host for Ichneumenoptera chrysophanes is the grapevine. Larvae bore into the woody parts of the plant, including shoots and older cordons. By spending their life cycle hidden deep within the wood, they successfully evade many external environmental factors and standard contact pesticide applications, making management particularly challenging for viticulturists.

The biological cycle of this moth is synchronized with the vegetative season of the grape. Adult moths emerge in the summer to lay eggs near cracks in the vine bark. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the core of the vine, where they feed on sapwood and heartwood. The larval stage can last for a long duration, causing progressive damage from the inside out.

The damage caused by these insects is critical: they disrupt the vascular system of the vine, leading to stunted shoot growth, wilting, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. If left untreated, severe infestations can result in the loss of major vine scaffold branches, significantly reducing the lifespan and fruit-bearing capacity of the vineyard.
