Description

The European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) is a prominent member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive forest insects, causing widespread mortality in Norway spruce stands.

This species primarily targets mature Norway spruce trees. While it typically colonizes trees stressed by drought, windthrow, or pollution, high population densities allow it to switch to healthy trees, overwhelming their natural chemical defenses through mass attack.

Its biological cycle is highly dependent on climate. After overwintering, adults emerge in spring to bore into the bark. They construct nuptial chambers and egg galleries under the bark, where larvae feed on the phloem and cambium layers. Development speed varies with temperature, allowing for multiple generations per year in warmer regions.

The damage is caused by the disruption of nutrient and water transportation within the tree. As larvae feed, they create an extensive network of tunnels that girdle the trunk. This leads to rapid desiccation of the tree, needle discolouration, and eventually tree death, creating large forest dieback gaps.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Rapid detection and sanitation logging of infested trees.
  • Implementation of pheromone-based monitoring and attract-and-kill programs.
  • Deployment of trap logs during the early spring flight period.
  • Maintenance of forest hygiene by removing logging residues.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as woodpeckers and parasitic wasps.
