Description
Systematic position: The Larch bark beetle (Ips cembrae) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a significant forest pest that primarily attacks coniferous species, causing substantial economic loss in forestry by boring into the bark and cambium layer.
Host plants: The primary host for this beetle is the larch (Larix species). However, during periods of population outbreaks or environmental stress, it can also infest other conifers such as Norway spruce, pine, and cedar. The beetle prefers trees with moderate bark thickness, typically targeting the middle and upper parts of the tree trunk.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in the forest litter or under the bark of host trees. Emergence occurs in the spring when temperatures rise. Females create gallery systems under the bark, where they deposit eggs. Larvae hatch and excavate tunnels perpendicular to the maternal gallery. Depending on the climate, the species may complete one or two generations per year.
Damage character and impact: The damage is caused by the construction of galleries, which disrupts the tree's vascular system, preventing the flow of nutrients. Signs of infestation include "frass" (bore dust) accumulating on the bark surface, resin bleeding, and subsequent chlorosis or shedding of needles. High-density attacks rapidly lead to the death of the tree.
