The primary hosts for this beetle are pine species, specifically Pinus contorta and Pinus ponderosa in some regions. The insect typically colonizes weakened, stressed, or storm-damaged trees, though it may occasionally attack healthy timber during periods of high population outbreaks, leading to rapid deterioration of the forest stand.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of Ips emarginatus is adapted to the environmental conditions of its habitat. Mating occurs beneath the bark, where the female constructs a gallery and deposits eggs. Larvae hatch and create galleries that radiate from the central maternal tunnel, feeding on the cambium layer.
