Systematic position: Hauser's bark beetle (Ips hauseri) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect recognized as a major threat to coniferous forests in mountainous regions, causing significant ecological and economic impact.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this species include various spruce species (notably the Schrenk spruce) and fir trees. The beetle prefers to attack weakened or stressed trees, although during outbreak conditions, it is capable of successfully colonizing and killing healthy forest stands.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Ips hauseri is closely tied to seasonal temperature fluctuations. Adults typically overwinter under the bark or in the forest litter.
