Description

Systematic position: The Ips integer beetle is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily. As a bark beetle, it is specialized in colonizing the phloem and cambium layers of various coniferous tree species.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets pine trees (Pinus). While it often colonizes stressed or fallen timber, it is also capable of mounting mass attacks on standing, healthy trees during population outbreaks, leading to significant economic losses in the forestry sector.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves mating and tunneling under the host bark. Females construct galleries to lay eggs, and the resulting larvae feed on the inner bark layers. The life cycle culminates with the development of pupae and the emergence of adult beetles, which then exit the host through characteristic small holes in the bark.

Damage and pest status: The primary injury is caused by the disruption of the tree's vascular transport system. By severing the cambium, larvae and adults prevent the flow of nutrients and water, which causes the tree to weaken, wilt, and eventually die. The presence of frass (boring dust) on the bark surface is a major diagnostic sign of infestation.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to suppress beetle populations:

  • Sanitation logging: removing and disposing of infested trees promptly.
  • Monitoring: using pheromone traps to track adult beetle activity levels.
  • Silvicultural practices: maintaining forest vigor through proper thinning and site management.
  • Prompt removal of storm-damaged or fallen wood which acts as a breeding ground.
