The mountain pine beetle (Ips montanus) is a significant forest pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). The primary hosts for this beetle are pine species. The insects prefer weakened trees, often those stressed by environmental factors like drought, root disease, or storm damage. However, during outbreaks, they can aggressively attack and overcome the defenses of healthy, vigorous trees.
The biological cycle of Ips montanus includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult beetles bore through the outer bark to reach the cambium layer.
