Six-toothed spruce bark beetle

The six-toothed bark beetle (Ips sexdentatus) is a member of the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a major pest of coniferous forests across the Palearctic region, known for its ability to cause extensive damage to timber and standing forest health.

The primary host species for this beetle is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), although it also frequently attacks spruce and larch. The beetle is particularly attracted to weakened, stressed, or wind-fallen trees, but during periods of population outbreaks, it will readily colonize healthy and mature stands.

The lifecycle of Ips sexdentatus consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Male beetles initiate the attack by boring into the bark to establish a nuptial chamber. After mating, females construct longitudinal maternal galleries beneath the bark, where they deposit eggs. The resulting larvae feed on the cambium, creating secondary galleries that effectively girdle the tree.

The visual signs of infestation include the presence of reddish-brown frass (boring dust) accumulating in bark crevices and at the base of the trunk. The damage is severe as the galleries disrupt the vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients, which often leads to the death of the tree within a single growing season.
