Kabuzo is a common term used to describe a specific insect pest affecting citrus orchards, scientifically identified as the citrus flower moth. This pest is a significant concern for growers, as it specializes in targeting the reproductive organs of citrus trees, leading to substantial economic losses in commercial fruit production.

Taxonomically, the insect belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Yponomeutidae. It has evolved to synchronize its life cycle with the flowering periods of its host plants. Its biology is characterized by a high reproductive rate in favorable temperate and subtropical climates, making it a persistent challenge for farmers.

The life cycle begins when adult moths lay eggs on the buds of citrus trees. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the flower buds and developing fruits. This feeding behavior destroys the internal structures of the flower, which prevents successful pollination and causes the immediate abortion of the buds and small fruits.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily quantitative, as it drastically reduces the number of fruits reaching maturity. In cases of high infestation, the visual impact includes carpeted ground beneath trees littered with fallen blossoms and malformed fruit, significantly diminishing the marketability and yield of the orchard.

Growers should utilize pheromone monitoring to predict peak activity periods and apply targeted insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded. Furthermore, maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and pruning can help mitigate the stress caused by pest damage.
