Deltoid scale

The deltoid scale (Kilifia deltoides) is a species of soft scale insect belonging to the family Coccidae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is recognized as a significant threat to a variety of woody plants, particularly in tropical environments and greenhouse settings.

It infests a wide range of host plants, most notably citrus species, coffee plants, and numerous ornamental tropical plants including Ficus and orchids. Due to its cryptic appearance, infestations often go unnoticed until significant damage to the plant's health has occurred.

The biological cycle of this insect involves multiple life stages, including egg, crawler, and adult. The name is derived from the distinct, shield-like deltoid shape of the adult females. Crawlers are the dispersive stage, moving actively before settling down to feed permanently on the underside of leaves or along stems.

Damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, which deprives the plant of vital nutrients and water. This often results in leaf yellowing, stunting, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and impairs photosynthesis, further compromising the plant.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling deltoid scale populations effectively:

• Regular monitoring of host plants for signs of scale clusters.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler activity window.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate sedentary adult females.
• Deployment of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps or predatory ladybird beetles.
