Description
The banded bark beetle (Kissophagus fasciatus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. Although often secondary, this pest can cause significant physiological stress to trees by targeting the nutrient-conducting layers beneath the bark.
This beetle primarily infests various fruit-bearing trees, including apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus), and hawthorn (Crataegus). It tends to target trees that are already weakened by environmental stress, drought, or poor management practices, making them susceptible to colonization.
The life cycle involves the adult beetle boring through the outer bark to create galleries where eggs are laid. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the cambium and inner bark tissues. By creating extensive larval tunnels, the pest effectively girdles the tree, which severely disrupts the translocation of essential nutrients and water.
The economic impact of Kissophagus fasciatus is mainly observed in the decline of fruit production and the loss of individual trees within an orchard. A heavily infested tree will show symptoms such as canopy dieback, yellowing leaves, and reduced fruit size, often leading to mortality if not detected early.
