Kleidocerys
Kleidocerys
Description
Systematic position. Kleidocerys is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Lygaeidae. The most common species, Kleidocerys resedae, is widely recognized as the birch catkin bug, which is frequently found in temperate forest ecosystems and ornamental plantings.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest include birch (Betula) species. However, they are also known to feed on alder, rhododendrons, and various species within the Rosaceae family. They are often detected in nursery environments and urban green spaces where these specific tree types are cultivated.
Biology and life cycle. These insects typically overwinter as adults, finding shelter in leaf litter, deep bark crevices, or dry plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds and foliage. Depending on the geographical location and climatic conditions, the pest completes one or two generations per year.
Damage characteristics and economic impact. The feeding activity of these bugs causes deformation of young leaves, chlorotic spots, and sometimes premature leaf drop. In high population densities, the insects can significantly weaken trees, leading to reduced annual growth rates and diminished aesthetic value of ornamental specimens in public parks and private gardens.
- Removal and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn.
- Monitoring of foliage during the early spring growth phase.
- Application of systemic insecticides for severe infestations.
- Maintenance of plant health to reduce susceptibility to secondary pests.
Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Reducing overwintering sites by cleaning up debris is the most important cultural practice. When populations exceed economic thresholds, the use of registered insecticides is recommended, targeting the nymphs during their active feeding stages in the spring.
