Description
Kleidocerys obovatus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Rhyparochromidae. It is a specialized species primarily associated with trees of the Betulaceae family. In scientific literature, it is classified as a phytophage that feeds mainly on the sap of the plant's reproductive organs.
The primary hosts subjected to attacks by this pest are various species of birch (Betula), and occasionally alder. Significant damage is often recorded in forest nurseries, public parks, and forest stands, where the accumulation of these bugs can reach high population densities during the seed ripening stages.
The biology of this species is characterized by one or two generations per season, depending on regional climatic conditions. Adults (imagos) overwinter in forest litter, under tree bark, or in other sheltered areas. With the onset of warm weather, the bugs migrate to host plants to mate and lay eggs within catkins or developing seeds.
The nature of the damage involves the depletion of the birch's reproductive organs. By feeding on the sap of developing seeds and catkins, the bugs cause premature shedding, deformation, and reduced germination rates of the seeds. At high population densities, the pest can significantly inhibit natural forest regeneration and decrease the aesthetic value of the trees.
Management strategies include both cultural and chemical control measures. It is crucial to maintain sanitation by removing leaf litter and plant debris where adults overwinter. If mass outbreaks threaten the health of the stand, insecticides with systemic or contact action are effective when applied during the active sap flow and catkin formation periods, in accordance with local forestry regulations.
