Systematic position: The weevil Kuschelorhynchus macadamiae belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This highly specialized pest represents a significant threat to commercial macadamia orchards, particularly in regions where this nut is cultivated extensively for international markets.

Host plants and damage: The primary and almost exclusive host for this species is the macadamia tree (Macadamia integrifolia). Adults and larvae focus their damage on the developing nuts, boring into the husks and kernels. The feeding activity of the larvae destroys the kernel entirely, rendering the nut unmarketable and causing significant economic loss to growers.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenological development of the macadamia fruit. Adult females deposit eggs on the surface of young, developing nuts. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow through the pericarp and into the kernel to feed on the nutrient-rich oils. The entire larval development occurs within the nut, followed by pupation inside the damaged fruit.

Economic impact: Damage caused by Kuschelorhynchus macadamiae is not limited to physical kernel consumption. Holes created by the larvae allow entry for various secondary infections, including molds and fungal pathogens, which further degrade the quality of the harvest.
