Bamboo scale

The genus Kuwanaspis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These insects are well-known armored scales that primarily target bamboo species, acting as significant pests in nurseries, gardens, and industrial plantations.

These pests colonize the stems, foliage, and shoots of host plants. By piercing the plant tissue with their mouthparts, they extract essential sap, which directly impacts the plant's metabolic functions and overall vitality throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of Kuwanaspis consists of eggs, mobile nymphs known as crawlers, and sessile adults. The adult females remain protected under a rigid, waxy scale covering, which provides resistance against environmental stressors and many traditional chemical treatments.

Symptoms of infestation include yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and visible white crusts or bumps on the culms. Heavy infestations can lead to shoot dieback, crown thinning, and in extreme cases, the total death of the plant due to nutritional depletion and secondary fungal infections.
