Description
Howard's bamboo scale (Kuwanaspis howardi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family within the Hemiptera order. This species is known as a significant threat to bamboo plantations and ornamental bamboo species, as it feeds exclusively on the sap of these plants.
The pest primarily targets the stems and culms of bamboo plants. By inserting their stylets into the plant tissue, the scales extract essential nutrients, causing systemic stress to the host plant. They are commonly found in dense clusters, particularly under leaf sheaths or along the nodes of the bamboo stalks.
The life cycle of this scale is typical for diaspidid insects, characterized by the development of a protective hard shield or test. Adult females are sessile, remaining attached to one spot throughout their reproductive life, while the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are mobile and responsible for dispersing throughout the plant canopy.
Damage caused by Kuwanaspis howardi includes chlorosis, stunting of growth, and structural weakness of the culms. Heavy infestations often result in the death of individual stalks or severe dieback of the entire clump. The presence of the scales is easily identified by the white, elongated waxy coverings visible on the bamboo surface.
