Bamboo scale

Systematic position. The bamboo scale (Kuwanaspis pseudoleucaspis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This small sap-sucking pest is a specialized threat to various species of bamboo, significantly impacting both the aesthetics and the health of ornamental plants in landscapes and nurseries.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this scale insect include species from the genera Phyllostachys, Sasa, and Pseudosasa. It is most frequently encountered in areas where bamboo is cultivated in dense stands, such as botanical gardens, greenhouses, and commercial nurseries where the pest can easily spread between plants.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Females are sedentary and protected by an elongated, whitish, or light-colored scale covering. Overwintering typically occurs in the adult female stage, which becomes active and begins laying eggs under the protective scale as soon as spring temperatures increase.

Damage and pest impact. The bamboo scale feeds by inserting its mouthparts into the plant tissue and sucking out essential cell sap. This feeding activity causes generalized plant weakness, yellowing of the foliage, and premature drying. In cases of severe infestation, the bamboo culms become completely encrusted with scale coverings, leading to distorted growth and the potential death of the plant.

Control measures. Controlling this pest is difficult due to the protective wax covering that shields the insect from external treatments. Effective management strategies include:

• Regular monitoring of bamboo culms to detect early signs of infestation.
• Manual cleaning of stems to reduce the initial population size.
• Application of systemic insecticides, such as imidacloprid, applied when the mobile nymphs are most vulnerable.
• Maintaining optimal plant health through proper irrigation and nutrition to increase natural resistance.
