Campeche weevil

Systematic position: The Campeche weevil (Lachnopus campechianus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a known agricultural pest found primarily in tropical and subtropical regions, where it poses a recurring challenge to orchard management and ornamental cultivation.

Affected crops: This pest demonstrates a preference for citrus species, including oranges, limes, and grapefruits. It is also capable of colonizing various tropical fruit trees and ornamental woody plants. Because of its broad host range within these environments, it can persist in orchards throughout the entire growing season.

Biology and life cycle: Like other members of the weevil family, the Campeche weevil undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adult insects feed on foliage, while eggs are laid in plant tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae drop to the soil, where they feed on the root system, completing their development underground before emerging as adults to repeat the cycle.

Damage and economic impact: Adult weevils create characteristic serrated or notched edges on leaves. However, the subterranean activity of the larvae is often more destructive, as it compromises the root system’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. This results in stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and potentially the total collapse of younger trees under stress.

Control measures: A successful control program integrates chemical and cultural practices to address both life stages.
