Description

Systematic position: The thistle head weevil (Larinus planus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a snout beetle that has evolved to thrive on specific host plants within the Asteraceae family.

Host plants and damage: The primary hosts are various species of thistles (Carduus) and Canada thistles (Cirsium). While often studied as a biological control agent for invasive weeds, in agricultural areas, its activity can be considered a nuisance if it impacts related beneficial crops or nursery plants.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by a single generation per year. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as soil or leaf litter. In the spring, they emerge, mate, and females lay eggs into the developing flower heads, where larvae feed and develop through several instars before pupation.

Nature of damage: Damage is predominantly caused by the larvae, which destroy the seeds and internal tissues of the thistle flower heads. This disruption prevents the plant from setting viable seeds, effectively terminating the reproductive capacity of the affected flower buds.
