Description
The artichoke weevil (Larinus scolymi) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets plants within the Asteraceae family, most notably the globe artichoke, posing a significant economic threat to commercial plantations.
The life cycle of the weevil is closely synchronized with the development of the host plant. Adult weevils overwinter in the soil or protected debris and emerge in the spring to feed on foliage and developing flower buds. Females deposit their eggs directly into the budding flower heads.
The larval stage is responsible for the primary damage. Once hatched, larvae tunnel into the artichoke heart, consuming the receptacle and inner floral parts. This feeding activity leads to the rapid decay of the bud, rendering it commercially useless and causing severe losses for producers.
Visible signs of infestation include small holes in the buds, stunted growth, and premature wilting of the floral structures. Because the larvae remain hidden deep inside the artichoke, infestation is often discovered only when the product quality is already severely compromised.
