Systematic position: The minute brown scavenger beetle (Latridius minutus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Latridiidae. These tiny insects are commonly associated with stored agricultural products, where they thrive in environments that support the growth of various molds and fungi.

Affected crops and commodities: This pest primarily targets stored grains, seeds, flour, cereals, dried fruits, and animal feeds. It is most frequently encountered in warehouses, grain elevators, and barns where humidity levels are poorly managed, creating conditions conducive to fungal proliferation.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is strictly dependent on moisture levels in the substrate. Adults lay eggs directly onto grain or materials laden with fungal spores. Larvae and pupae complete their development in these damp, fungus-rich environments. High humidity and mold presence are essential for mass reproduction, as these serve as the primary food source for both adults and larvae.

Character of damage and economic impact: While direct feeding damage to the grain kernel is minor, the scavenger beetle is a significant indicator of spoilage. By feeding on mold spores and decaying organic matter, they facilitate the spread of fungal growth within the grain mass. This leads to heating of the grain, chemical degradation, and significant reduction in the quality and market value of the stored produce.

Control measures: Effective management relies on maintaining grain moisture content below 13-14% and ensuring proper aeration. Preventive strategies include rigorous sanitation of storage facilities, removal of spilled grain, and dust cleaning. In cases of severe infestation, fumigation with authorized chemicals is necessary, alongside the thorough disinfestation of empty silos prior to the arrival of new batches.
