Ant scale

Ant scale (Lecanopsis formicarum) is a specialized insect species belonging to the family Coccidae (soft scales) within the order Hemiptera. These pests are well-known in entomology for their myrmecophilous behavior, meaning they maintain a symbiotic relationship with ants, which protect the scales and facilitate their movement across host plants.

This species primarily infests various grasses and herbaceous plants. Because the scale insects often reside in the root zone, under leaf sheaths, or in crevices of the stems, they are frequently overlooked during initial crop inspections. This cryptic nature allows populations to build up significantly before the damage becomes visually apparent to farmers.

The life cycle of Lecanopsis formicarum includes the egg stage, several nymphal stages (crawlers), and the adult phase. Adult females are sessile, losing their mobility once they anchor themselves to the plant to feed. Their bodies become covered in a protective cuticle that shields them from both environmental factors and many contact-based pesticides.

The primary damage results from the constant removal of plant sap, which leads to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and structural deformation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of fungus not only covers the plant surfaces but also disrupts photosynthesis, which can significantly reduce crop vigor and overall yield.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect. Strategies should focus on monitoring the presence of ants, as they often serve as indicators of a scale infestation. Chemical control is most effective when timed with the crawler stage, as these young nymphs are vulnerable to systemic insecticides that move through the plant's vascular system to reach the feeding pests.
