The California ash bark beetle (Leperisinus californicus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. Known for its impact on specific hardwood species, this beetle is a significant concern for both forest management and ornamental landscaping.

This beetle primarily attacks trees within the Oleaceae family, with a strong preference for ash trees (Fraxinus spp.). The insects are capable of colonizing various parts of the tree, usually targeting the trunk and larger branches where the bark provides optimal conditions for larval development.

The biological cycle involves the adult beetle boring into the bark to construct egg galleries. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae tunnel perpendicular to the maternal gallery, feeding on the nutrient-rich phloem. This behavior is characteristic of many bark beetles and creates a complex network of tunnels beneath the bark surface.

The damage caused by Leperisinus californicus is often visible through the presence of boring dust on the bark surface and tiny exit holes. As the tunnels disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, the tree begins to show signs of decline, including thinning foliage, branch dieback, and, in severe cases of infestation, total tree mortality.

Control strategies for this pest require a multi-faceted approach. Key methods include:

• Periodic monitoring using pheromone-based traps to track population spikes.
• Application of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence phase.
