Description

The genus Lepidiota belongs to the Scarabaeidae family within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are notorious pests in tropical and subtropical regions, frequently causing severe damage to various agricultural crops, most notably sugarcane plantations.

The life cycle of Lepidiota consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. While adult beetles may feed on tree foliage, the primary economic damage is caused by the larvae, commonly known as white grubs, which develop underground. Depending on the species, the larval stage can span from one to several years.

Lepidiota larvae dwell in the root zone of plants, consuming organic matter and living roots. By feeding on the root system, they disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, yellowing, and eventual plant mortality. Young crops are particularly susceptible to severe infestations.

The damage caused by these pests is often difficult to detect until the plant starts showing signs of wilting or death. Because the larvae remain hidden beneath the soil surface, regular monitoring of larval density in the soil is essential for effective pest management strategies.
