This insect is primarily recognized for its destructive impact on various agricultural crops, with a specific focus on sugarcane cultivation in various tropical and subtropical regions.
Taxonomically, the species is classified within the order Coleoptera. While the adult beetles are identifiable by their characteristic size and appearance, the most damaging phase of their life cycle is the larval stage. These larvae are typically found dwelling beneath the soil surface, where they are protected from environmental fluctuations and many contact insecticides.
The biology of Lepidiota laevis is complex, involving a complete metamorphosis. The life cycle begins when eggs are deposited in the soil. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo three distinct instars of development, during which they voraciously consume plant roots. Additionally, chemical control via soil-applied granular insecticides during the planting season is often employed.
