Description
The oyster shell scale (Lepidosaphes ulmi) is a significant sap-sucking pest belonging to the Diaspididae family. The adult female is characterized by a tough, brownish-grey armor that protects her from predators and environmental stress. This shell resembles the shape of an oyster shell, which serves as a diagnostic feature in the field.
This pest attacks a vast range of hosts, including pome fruits like apples and pears, stone fruits, and numerous ornamental shrubs such as lilac, poplar, and willow. By attaching themselves to the bark, these insects create dense colonies that can encircle twigs and branches, often leading to severe infestations.
The life cycle typically includes one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage beneath the female's protective shell. In late spring, minute yellow crawlers hatch and emerge to find suitable feeding sites. Once they settle and begin feeding, they secrete a wax layer, forming the characteristic armor that remains fixed for the rest of their lives.
The damage caused by the oyster shell scale is primarily due to the extraction of sap, which deprives the tree of essential nutrients. Symptoms include stunted terminal growth, yellowing or premature leaf drop, and dieback of smaller twigs. In extreme cases, the entire tree can become severely stressed and eventually die.
Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for the crawler emergence is critical, as this is the most vulnerable stage for chemical intervention. Horticultural oils applied during the dormant season are highly effective at smothering the overwintering eggs, while systemic or contact insecticides are recommended during the active crawler phase.
