Chinese scale

The Chinese scale (Lepidosaphes chinensis) is a pest species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is recognized for its ability to infest the bark and stems of various woody plants, significantly impacting the health and productivity of host vegetation.

This pest primarily attacks a wide range of fruit-bearing trees and ornamental shrubs. By piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, the Chinese scale causes severe physiological stress, which often results in stunted growth, yellowing foliage, reduced fruit size, and eventual dieback of infested branches.

The biological cycle of this insect involves an egg stage, a crawler (nymph) stage, and a sedentary adult stage protected by a hard, waxy scale cover. The crawler stage is the most critical period for population dispersal, as these small individuals move across the plant surface to locate suitable feeding sites before settling down to develop their protective shields.

Damage assessment shows that heavy infestations create a layered crust on the stems, which physically restricts bark expansion and obstructs natural gas exchange. These lesions serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi or bacteria, which can accelerate the decline of the plant tissue beyond the direct damage caused by the insects.

Management strategies for this pest require a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for the emergence of crawlers is essential to timing the application of systemic or contact insecticides effectively. Additionally, dormant season pruning of heavily infested branches and the application of horticultural oils help manage the population before the growing season begins.
