Fig mussel scale

Systematic position. The fig mussel scale (Lepidosaphes conchiformis) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Diaspididae. This specific pest is a serious threat to fig cultivation, characterized by its mussel-shaped protective scale that makes it highly resistant to many environmental factors.

Host plants. The primary host for this insect is the common fig (Ficus carica). While it shows a strong preference for figs, it may occasionally infest other Ficus species. Its narrow host range allows it to establish permanent populations within specialized orchard environments or ornamental gardens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves the overwintering of fertilized females under their protective armor on the bark. In spring, females lay eggs under the scale. The resulting crawlers are the only mobile stage; they disperse across the branches, find a suitable site, and settle to begin feeding, forming their own protective scale as they mature.

Damage and severity. Damage occurs through the extraction of sap from the bark and young shoots. Heavy infestations lead to bark cracking, shoot distortion, leaf yellowing, and premature abscission. If left unmanaged, the scale can cause significant limb dieback, drastically reducing the tree's overall vigor and fruit production capacity.

Control measures. Integrated pest management is essential for controlling this scale. Monitoring the emergence of crawlers is critical for timing insecticide applications, as these stages are susceptible to contact sprays. Furthermore, dormant oil applications help reduce the initial population density by suffocating the overwintering females on the bark surface.
