Cypress scale

Cypress scale (Lepidosaphes cupressi) is a significant pest belonging to the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects) within the order Hemiptera. This specialized insect infests various coniferous trees, feeding on the sap by inserting its stylets into the plant tissue, which causes systemic weakness over time.

The primary hosts of this pest include species from the Cupressaceae family, such as cypress (Cupressus), juniper (Juniperus), and arborvitae (Thuja). Cypress scale is frequently found in ornamental gardens and nurseries, where it can cause severe cosmetic damage and, in cases of heavy infestation, tree mortality.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, a mobile crawler stage, and a sedentary adult stage protected by a hard, waxy covering known as a scale or shield. The crawler phase is crucial for pest management, as it is the only stage where the insect is vulnerable to contact insecticides while moving across the plant's surface.

Damage symptoms include yellowing or browning of foliage, stunted growth of twigs, and bark cracking. As the insects multiply, they form crust-like colonies on the branches, drawing vital nutrients from the host. This loss of vitality renders the plant susceptible to environmental stresses and secondary diseases.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Cypress scale includes several critical practices:

• Early detection of crawler activity through periodic monitoring of branches.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the insect population.
• Application of systemic insecticides that penetrate plant tissue to kill feeding insects.
• Use of horticultural oils during the dormant season to suffocate overwintering scales.

Proper plant care, including appropriate irrigation and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization that stimulates soft growth, is essential for maintaining plant vigor and reducing the susceptibility to heavy scale infestation.
