Destefani scale

Systematic position. Lepidosaphes destefanii belongs to the family Diaspididae, order Hemiptera. These small insects are known as armored scales because they secrete a tough, waxy cover that protects their soft bodies from environmental stressors and pesticides.

Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the pistachio tree (Pistacia vera). While it shows a strong preference for pistachio, the species can infest various parts of the plant, including trunks, branches, and occasionally leaves, especially in arid or semi-arid climatic conditions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves several stages, starting from eggs laid under the maternal scale. Once hatched, the "crawlers" emerge as the only mobile stage of the insect. They move across the surface of the plant until they find a suitable spot to insert their mouthparts and begin feeding, eventually developing their own protective covering.

Damage and economic impact. As phloem feeders, these scales sap the plant's vital nutrients. Heavy infestations result in stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), and premature defoliation. Persistent damage weakens the tree significantly, making it susceptible to secondary infections and reducing the overall yield and quality of pistachio nuts.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce population pressure.
• Applying horticultural oils in early spring to smother overwintering stages.
• Using systemic insecticides timed precisely with the crawler emergence phase.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids in the orchard ecosystem.
