Pomegranate scale

The pomegranate scale (Lepidosaphes granati) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets pomegranate trees, causing substantial physiological stress when populations reach critical levels.

The insect primarily infests the bark of trunks and branches. By feeding on plant sap, the scale causes the bark to crack and dry out, which weakens the overall structural integrity of the tree and makes it more susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stress.

The biological cycle consists of the egg stage, the crawler stage (mobile nymphs), and the adult stage. The female is sedentary and protected by a hard scale cover. The crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving across the bark to establish new feeding sites before settling down to form their protective shields.

The economic impact of this pest is characterized by heavy sap depletion. Symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, and premature leaf drop. In cases of severe infestation, the tree may suffer from branch dieback, significantly reducing fruit yield and overall orchard productivity.
