Mulberry scale

The Mulberry scale (Lepidosaphes kuwacola) is a significant pest belonging to the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This armored scale insect poses a threat to various woody plants, most notably mulberry trees, as well as several ornamental and citrus species. Its survival is largely attributed to the hard waxy shield that covers and protects the insect throughout its life cycle.

The pest causes damage by inserting its stylets into the bark or leaf tissue to feed on plant sap. This feeding process depletes the plant's nutrient reserves, leading to localized tissue death. Over time, heavy infestations can result in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and the overall decline of the host tree’s health.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, a crawler stage, and a sessile adult stage. The crawler stage represents the only period of mobility for the insect. During this phase, the larvae wander across the plant surface to find suitable sites for feeding, making them vulnerable to treatment before they secrete their protective armor.

Signs of infestation include the presence of numerous small, scale-like structures on branches and trunks. When severe, these scales can overlap, forming a crust-like layer on the bark. This coverage can lead to bark cracking and creates entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi or bacteria, exacerbating the damage to the plant.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Lepidosaphes kuwacola. Key strategies include:

• Regular monitoring during the crawler emergence period.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides when crawlers are active.
• Dormant oil sprays to smother overwintering stages.
• Pruning and removal of heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles or parasitic wasps.
