Description

Taxonomic position: The apple mussel scale (Lepidosaphes malicola) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized pest known for forming distinct scale-like coverings that protect it from environmental factors and chemical treatments.

Host plants: The pest primarily affects apple trees, although it is also commonly found on pears, quince, hawthorn, and mountain ash. In high-density orchards, it can quickly spread throughout the canopy, negatively impacting the health of the entire plantation.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage beneath the protective scale of the dead female. Once temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into mobile "crawlers," which migrate to suitable feeding sites on the bark, insert their mouthparts, and begin secreting a new scale cover.

Damage symptoms: By extracting sap, the scale causes localized tissue damage, leading to bark cracking and reduced vigor. Severe infestations result in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, premature defoliation, and in extreme cases, the dieback of entire branches or death of the tree.

Control measures: Effective management requires both cultural and chemical approaches. Scrubbing old bark helps remove overwintering eggs. In spring, horticultural oils can be used to smother the eggs. Insecticide applications are most effective when timed specifically to the emergence of the crawler stage, as this is the most vulnerable point in the life cycle.
