Newstead scale
Lepidosaphes newsteadi
Description
Systematic position: Lepidosaphes newsteadi, commonly known as the Newstead scale, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. Like other armored scales, this insect remains immobile under a hardened protective cover made of wax and exuviae, which makes it challenging to control with conventional surface pesticides.
Host plants: This pest primarily affects conifer species. It is most frequently found on various junipers (Juniperus), cypresses (Cupressus), and related species in the Cupressaceae family, causing significant economic and aesthetic damage to nurseries, gardens, and urban landscape plantations.
Biology and life cycle: The Newstead scale typically completes one generation per year. It survives the winter as a fertilized female hidden beneath its protective shield. In late spring or early summer, females lay eggs under their shields, leading to the emergence of "crawlers." These mobile larvae disperse across the plant to find suitable feeding sites before settling down permanently.
Type of damage and harmfulness: The insects insert their mouthparts into the plant tissues to extract sap. This feeding process results in needle chlorosis, yellowing, and eventual premature needle drop. Severe infestations cause stunted growth, branch dieback, and in extreme cases, the total death of the host plant, particularly if the specimen is already stressed by drought or poor soil conditions.
Protection measures: Effective management requires identifying the crawler stage when the insects are most vulnerable. Applications of systemic insecticides or contact-based soaps and oils can significantly reduce populations. Furthermore, integrated pest management (IPM) practices, such as removing heavily infested branches and ensuring optimal plant health through irrigation and fertilization, are recommended.
