Description
Lepidosaphes noxia is a damaging species of scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These insects are well-known for their sedentary lifestyle as adults, protected by a waxy scale covering, which makes them highly resistant to environmental stressors and conventional pesticide applications.
The pest primarily affects woody plants, with a strong preference for species within the Rosaceae family. It is commonly found colonizing fruit trees such as apples, pears, and plums. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the tree bark, they draw nutrients directly from the phloem, causing significant stress to the host plant.
The life cycle typically includes egg, crawler (nymph), and adult stages. Overwintering occurs as fertilized females beneath their protective scales on the bark of twigs and branches. In the spring, these females produce eggs, which hatch into active crawlers. These crawlers are the only mobile stage, tasked with finding suitable locations on the host to settle and establish permanent feeding sites.
Damage caused by Lepidosaphes noxia is cumulative. Feeding by large colonies results in chlorosis, stunted growth of shoots, and overall decline of the tree's health. In severe cases, the bark may crack, and branches may die back, leading to substantial yield losses and reducing the lifespan of the affected trees if left unmanaged.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include cultural practices such as pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce population density. Chemical control is most effective during the crawler emergence period, using systemic insecticides or horticultural oils to suffocate the insects before they develop their protective scale coverings.
