Pine scale

The pine scale Lepidosaphes piniphila is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is specifically adapted to feed on needles and young twigs of various coniferous species. Because of its small size and the protective covering, the infestation often goes unnoticed until the tree shows visible signs of decline.

The primary hosts of this insect are pines, including common and decorative varieties. By inserting their mouthparts into the plant tissues, these insects extract vital sap, which deprives the tree of nutrients and energy. Young plantations and trees stressed by environmental factors are particularly susceptible to heavy colonization.

The life cycle involves a stationary female phase protected by a hard, waxy shield. Reproduction occurs once a year, with the insects overwintering as fertilized females. The most critical period for control is when the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge from under the maternal shield to colonize new parts of the host plant.

Damage caused by the pine scale results in needle chlorosis, wilting, and premature needle drop. Over time, heavy infestations significantly weaken the tree, leading to stunted growth, dieback of twigs, and eventually death of the host. Additionally, the feeding activity disrupts the plant's physiological processes, making it more prone to fungal infections.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and timely intervention:

• Regular inspection of the needles and twigs, especially during the crawler emergence period.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides that penetrate the plant tissues to reach the sucking insects.
• Application of horticultural oils during the dormant season to suffocate overwintering females.
• Maintenance of tree health through proper fertilization and watering to improve natural defenses.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the total pest population.
