Willow oyster scale

The willow oyster scale (Lepidosaphes salicina) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This scale insect is primarily associated with the Salicaceae family, focusing its lifecycle on the bark of willows and poplars, which serves as both its primary food source and structural habitat.

The host range of Lepidosaphes salicina is largely restricted to willow and poplar species, often found in natural environments, nurseries, and urban landscaping. Given their small size and bark-like appearance, these pests are frequently overlooked until the infestation has already reached a critical stage, potentially threatening the vitality of the entire plant.

The biology of this species involves a protective scale covering, which shields the female insect from environmental factors and natural predators. The lifecycle begins with eggs deposited under the female's shield. Upon hatching, the mobile crawler stage emerges to seek new sites on the host plant for feeding. Once a suitable location is found, they settle, lose their legs, and begin to form their own protective cover.

Damage occurs when the insects insert their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the bark and cambium, extracting sap and nutrients. This constant drainage weakens the tree, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, dieback of smaller twigs, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. The toxic saliva injected by the scale can also exacerbate the decline of the plant's vascular system.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that focuses on both physical and chemical control. Regular pruning and disposal of infested branches are essential to reduce the pest population density. During the crawler stage, systemic and contact insecticides are highly effective. Applying these at the right time ensures that the young nymphs are eliminated before they can establish permanent, protected colonies on the woody tissues.
