Linden comma scale

Systematic position. The Linden comma scale (Lepidosaphes tiliae) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a well-known pest that primarily affects deciduous trees, causing significant concern in urban landscapes and silviculture due to its ability to form dense colonies on trunks and branches.

Host plants and damage. The primary host for this species is the linden tree (Tilia), though it can also infest elm (Ulmus), hazel (Corylus), and birch (Betula). The insects feed on plant sap by inserting their stylets into the bark and vascular tissues. Heavy infestations cause leaf yellowing, twig dieback, and stunted overall growth of the host plant.

Biology and life cycle. This species typically completes one generation per year. Fertilized females overwinter protected by their hard, comma-shaped scales on the bark. In late spring or early summer, the females lay eggs under the scale. Once hatched, the mobile nymphs, known as "crawlers," emerge and move to find suitable feeding sites, where they eventually settle and develop their own protective shells.

Economic impact. As a sap-sucking pest, the Linden comma scale extracts vital nutrients from the host, leading to reduced vigor and aesthetic degradation of the trees. Persistent infestation weakens the tree's natural defenses, making it increasingly susceptible to secondary attacks from borers, fungal diseases, and environmental stressors, which can ultimately lead to tree mortality.

• Scrubbing infested bark manually to remove overwintering females.
• Application of horticultural dormant oils in early spring to smother the pests.
• Timing insecticide applications during the "crawler" stage in June for maximum effectiveness.
• Pruning and destroying severely infested branches to prevent further spread.
