Willow scale

Willow scale (Lepidosaphes yanagicola) is a significant pest belonging to the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is primarily known for attacking various species of willow (Salix), significantly impacting the vigor and structural integrity of both ornamental and natural willow stands.

The pest causes damage by feeding on the phloem sap of the branches and trunks. By piercing the bark and inserting their stylets, these insects extract vital nutrients from the tree. This process leads to localized necrotic spots, yellowing of foliage, and in severe cases, the dieback of entire twigs and branches.

The life cycle of this scale insect is typical for its family. They pass through an egg stage, a crawler stage, and a sessile adult stage. The crawler stage is the only mobile phase, occurring during the warmer months. Once a suitable feeding site is located, the crawler settles, secretes a protective, waxy scale covering, and remains stationary for the rest of its life.

The economic and aesthetic impact of willow scale is substantial. Heavy infestations cover the bark with a thick crust of scales, which severely dehydrates the tree and disrupts nutrient transport. This stress makes the host plant prone to secondary infections from fungi and opportunistic wood-boring insects, ultimately shortening the lifespan of the tree.

Integrated pest management strategies are recommended:

• Application of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler activity period.
• Dormant oil sprays in late winter or early spring to target overwintering females.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the pest population density.
• Enhancing tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization to improve resistance.
