Leaf-footed bug

The leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus) is a genus of insects in the family Coreidae, part of the order Hemiptera. These bugs are easily recognized by the leaf-like expansions on their hind tibiae, which serve as their primary morphological identification marker. Various species within this genus have become significant pests, affecting agricultural crops and ornamental trees worldwide.

Leptoglossus bugs are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide variety of plants. They are particularly notorious for causing severe damage to conifer seeds and cones, causing significant losses in forestry and seed orchards. In agricultural settings, they are known to attack a range of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, pomegranates, citrus, and almonds, compromising crop quality.

The biology of the leaf-footed bug involves a lifecycle consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs in rows on the needles or leaves of the host plant. Nymphs go through five instars before reaching adulthood. They are highly mobile and tend to aggregate in large numbers, especially when seeking overwintering sites, often entering houses or sheds in autumn.

Damage is caused by the piercing-sucking mouthparts of the bugs. They inject salivary enzymes into the plant tissue to liquefy the contents of the seeds or fruit cells, which they then consume. This results in fruit deformation, reduced seed viability, and internal browning. Such damage makes the produce unmarketable and weakens the host plant, making it susceptible to secondary infections.

Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Cultural controls include maintaining healthy plant vigor and removing debris where adults might overwinter. Physical barriers, such as netting, can protect individual high-value crops. Chemical control using insecticides is effective but should be timed carefully, targeting nymphs, as adults are harder to kill and often exhibit resistance.
