Chilean leaf-footed bug

Systematic position. Leptoglossus chilensis belongs to the family Coreidae (leaf-footed bugs) within the suborder Heteroptera. This insect is easily identified by the flattened, leaf-like expansions on its hind tibiae, which are the primary morphological feature defining this group of hemipterans.

Host plants and damage. This species is a significant polyphagous pest affecting a wide range of fruit and ornamental plants. It is particularly destructive to vineyards, as well as peach, apple, and pear orchards. By using its proboscis to pierce tissues, the insect sucks plant fluids, resulting in localized necrosis and fruit malformation.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically deposited in clusters on the undersides of leaves or directly on fruit surfaces. Nymphs resemble adults but lack functional wings, and they feed aggressively throughout their development. The rate of development is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, allowing for multiple generations per growing season.

Symptoms and economic impact. The feeding activity of Leptoglossus chilensis leaves noticeable puncture marks that often develop into sunken, necrotic lesions. These wounds compromise the fruit's integrity, frequently acting as entry points for secondary pathogens and fungal rots. Heavy infestations significantly reduce harvest quality and overall plant vigor, leading to substantial economic losses.

Control measures. Management of this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining orchard sanitation and eliminating alternative host weeds are essential to disrupt the bug’s life cycle. Chemical control involves the application of targeted insecticides during periods of peak activity, ensuring adherence to pre-harvest intervals and protecting beneficial insect populations.
