Western conifer seed bug

The Western conifer seed bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. Originally native to Western North America, this species has successfully invaded Europe and parts of Asia, becoming a significant pest in both natural forests and commercial seed orchards.

The primary hosts of this pest are various coniferous species, particularly those in the genus Pinus. However, it also attacks Picea, Abies, Tsuga, and Pseudotsuga species. The bug is highly specialized in feeding on the reproductive structures of these trees, specifically the developing seeds within the cones.

Regarding its biology, the insect has a single generation per year in colder climates, though it may be multivoltine in warmer regions. Adults overwinter in protected sites, such as cracks in tree bark, buildings, or other dry crevices. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing cones and lay eggs in lines along the conifer needles.

The damage caused by the Western conifer seed bug is primarily economic. By inserting its piercing-sucking mouthparts through cone scales, the bug injects enzymes and extracts the liquid endosperm from the seeds. This results in seed abortion, decreased germination rates, and total loss of seed yield, which is critical for reforestation and silviculture efforts.

Management of the pest is challenging. In seed orchards, the primary strategy involves the use of pheromone-based monitoring to determine population density. Insecticides can be applied during peak periods of adult activity, but such measures are generally impractical in large-scale forest settings. Silvicultural practices, such as maintaining healthy tree vigor and removing severely infested trees, remain the most sustainable approaches.
