Leptoglossus stigma

Leptoglossus stigma

Description

Leptoglossus stigma is a species of leaf-footed bug belonging to the family Coreidae, order Hemiptera. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest in tropical and subtropical regions, this insect is characterized by the leaf-like expansions on its hind tibiae. It is a highly mobile species, capable of causing widespread damage if left unmanaged within orchard environments.

The host range of Leptoglossus stigma primarily includes fruit and nut-bearing trees. It is frequently observed causing economic losses in citrus groves, avocado orchards, guava plantations, and passion fruit farms. Due to its polyphagous nature, it may shift between different plant hosts throughout the season, complicating control efforts for farmers managing mixed-crop agricultural systems.

The life cycle follows a gradual metamorphosis consisting of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically deposited in rows on the undersides of leaves or on the surface of fruit. Nymphs remain gregarious during their early stages, feeding on plant sap. The progression through instars depends heavily on environmental conditions, with warm, humid weather significantly accelerating the development rate and increasing the number of generations per year.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily related to its piercing-sucking mouthparts. By feeding on the fruit and young shoots, the bugs inject enzymes that break down plant tissues, resulting in necrotic spots, sunken areas on the fruit, and structural deformation. In severe infestations, feeding leads to premature fruit drop and the entry of secondary pathogens through the feeding wounds, which further degrades crop quality.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals. Recommended practices include:

  • Regular field monitoring to detect early-stage nymphs and egg clusters.
  • Mechanical removal and destruction of infested fruit to curb population growth.
  • Application of selective insecticides targeting nymphal stages when populations exceed thresholds.
  • Maintaining clean orchard floors to remove potential breeding habitats.
  • Preserving natural enemy populations, such as predatory wasps and assassin bugs.
